Day 19: Thu 03 Mar – Tathra to Bombala

Ride: 9.3 km

Drive: 246km

Wendy was quite glad she had a small piece of toast this morning with her coffee.  The morning ride started out towards the bridge again and then came back into town, up a MONSTER hill then back to the van for a real breakfast.  After breakfast we packed up and left about 9:30am and took off in the wrong direction!!  Greg had thought he could get to Bega that way, but it was rough dirt.  Oh well, it was only 15 mins out before we found a place to turn around and go back the way we'd come.  Where we turned around there was a dirt road that would connect us to the Bega road but it was "of unknown quality ".   Half and hour later we were driving up the MONSTER hill with a van and it was just as difficult!  We eventually made it to Bega where we parked in a side street, strolled to Maccas for a coffee and cake (we forgot to bring our own!) and then had a wander through the lovely town of Bega and made our way back to the van.

On our way through Candelo on the way to Bombala, we heard someone tooting their horn and flashing their lights so pulled up thinking the bikes had fallen off the back of the van as the road was quite rough.  They just wanted to tell us that if we were heading to Bombala on this road, that it was definitely not suitable for a van.  So after making a hasty but safe u-turn we made our way through Wynham and Cathcart before arriving in Bombala about lunch time.  We found a rest-stop/park and pulled in, made lunch and ate it under the shade of lots of trees.  As Triona was not going to be home until about 2:30pm there was no rush.

We left Bombala about 2:15pm and arrived at "Kilbrechin" (Triona and Jum's sheep and cattle station) about 2:30pm, about 2 minutes before Triona.  We set up the van but left it hitched-up, had a cuppa then went sheep mustering!  Some 1200 sheep needed to be moved from a paddock close to the house to one further away, so with Jum and Will (their son) on motorbikes, Greg in the buggy and Triona and Wendy in the ute with Nel (the very young and enthusiastic working dog) on the back, off we went.  Greg said he had an absolute ball and Triona at one stage asked if he had done this before as he seemed to be a natural and was able to sense what the animals were going to do or where they were heading next.  Greg, on completion of the activity reckons he should have been a livestock farmer as he loved every minute.

After getting home, we prepared dinner – BBQ and salads which were yummo, and after helping wash and clean up it was into bed about 10pm.
